About the Academy

The Seven Swords Academy is a school of Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) and Swordsmanship located within the Warrior Life Center,Tacoma, Washington. We primarily study and practice Late Medieval Longsword and its accompanying arts of Grappling, Dagger, Spear and Polearms. We work through both the scholarship and practical application of historical manuals left to us by Masters of the Art from the late 14th to 15th centuries, such as Fiore dei Liberi and Filippo Vadi, the Liechtenauer Tradition (Doebringer, Ringek, and von Danzig) as well as any manual that can further our understanding of the material. Though not our primary effort, we also study Sword and Buckler, Short Sword, Sabre, Rapier, and Single-stick as many of the fundamental principles apply.

Recently, the Seven Swords Academy has moved to a more central location in the South Tacoma business district. Not only is this a move in a physical sense, it is also a fundamental one. Officially reopened on October 1st, 2016, the Seven Swords Academy is now part of an integrated martial arts Center teaching the grappling arts (with Traditional Jujutsu) and it’s continued focus on medieval weapons combat and swordsmanship, for a more complete and rounded approach to Martial Arts as a whole. These disciplines come with different instructors working together and cross training to provide a comprehensive system that agrees with the principles and fundamentals of movement inherent in a proper, functional martial arts with contextual application in mind.

The Seven Swords Academy still focuses on medieval swordsmanship, with Longsword, Dagger, Sword and Buckler, Dussack, Staff and Spear (among other strange and forgotten weapons of European heritage) and is still a separate class which, depending on the student’s needs, can be added to a curriculum of hand-to-hand combatives. The Seven Swords Academy is proud to be a member of the Center and work in collaboration with it’s sister arts.

  1. Are you still teaching classes? My 12 yr old son is interested. Please let me know if we can come to a class to try it out. He is available Tuesday and Thursday’s. Could he participate in the Family class?
